Our story

Two dreamers, one holiday home

We are Dennis and Fleur, a couple from the Netherlands with a shared passion for hospitality, craftsmanship and adventure. In 2021 we became proud parents of our son Joris, and together we love nothing more than heading to the islands. The tranquillity, the open space, the salty air — it is a place where we truly find ourselves. That love for island life inspired us to take the leap and make our dream come true: our own holiday home on the beautiful island of Ameland.

Dennis

Entrepreneur & Developer

Car mechanic since 2006
Application developer since 2013
10 years as a firefighter (crew member & commander)
Renovated multiple homes himself
Entrepreneur at heart
The builder

From mechanic to entrepreneur

Dennis started his career in 2006 as a car mechanic. With a wrench in hand and engine oil under his nails, he learned what it means to create something with your hands. But something was itching, because he wanted more. In 2013 he made the switch to the IT world and retrained as an application developer.

That retraining was the beginning of a new adventure. Dennis started his own company and built websites and applications with passion. Entrepreneurship runs in the family, and soon the business grew into a success. But the skill from his first profession never left him: he renovated his own home, his parents' house, and learned every aspect of building and renovation along the way. In addition, Dennis served as a firefighter for ten years — six years as a crew member and four years as a crew commander. That experience taught him responsibility, teamwork and composure under pressure.

That combination of digital thinking and physical building now comes together beautifully at De Vrijheid. From the booking website to the renovation of the house — Dennis has left his fingerprint everywhere.

The heart

From caregiver to dream maker

Fleur started her education in Care and Welfare in 2007 and specialised in childcare, where she worked with heart and soul for over ten years. Her warm personality and eye for detail made her beloved by children and parents alike. But Fleur's heart reached further than just childcare.

Alongside her work, she volunteered with people with disabilities and went to Ghana for three months for a special adventure. A few years later, Dennis and Fleur travelled together to Tanzania. Those experiences strengthened their desire to build something of their own, something that brings people together.

Now Fleur has taken the step to make her dream come true. She has left her job in childcare to focus entirely on De Vrijheid, and she is also setting up a little cookie shop. Baking is her greatest hobby, and who knows — you might find one of her homemade treats waiting for you upon arrival.

Our dream

Why De Vrijheid?

The name says it all. De Vrijheid (Freedom) stands for letting go, enjoying and finding complete peace. Thanks to the success of Dennis's business, we were able to make this dream a reality. We didn't just buy a holiday home — we poured our heart and all our skills into it. Every room, every detail is furnished with love. And if our son Joris had his way, we would live there all year round — he loves visiting the lighthouses and would happily play with sand on the beach all day long. We believe that a holiday is only truly relaxing when you feel at home, and that is exactly what we want to offer you.

Our dream is also a sustainable one: step by step we're working toward a net-zero home — with solar panels on the roof and plans for a home battery and going off gas. See what we're doing for sustainability .
