Ameland is a surprisingly rewarding island to discover by motorcycle. The Wagenborg ferry crossing is considerably cheaper for a motorcycle than for a car, and especially on busy days there is often still room for motorcycles when cars are already fully booked.
The island is not so large that you spend hours on the road, but riding from one side to the other, alongside the dunes, across the polder roads and through the villages, is simply wonderful on a motorcycle. Ride in one relaxed loop from Hollum in the west to Buren in the east and back again. Along the way, dunes, polders and villages take turns.
Follow the roads towards the North Sea side with sweeping views over beach and dunes. Stop at a beach pavilion for a cup of coffee.
The paved roads alongside the dune area and the Ameland woods are quiet and winding, a delight to ride at your leisure. The dunes and nature reserve itself are protected, so you enjoy them from the road.
Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren each have their own atmosphere. On a motorcycle you hop easily from one characterful village to the next.
Book the Wagenborg crossing from Holwerd online in advance so your place is secured. Motorcycles have a separate, lower fare and you board and disembark first, so you are quickly on the island.
Keep an eye on the weather, as it can be quite windy on the Wadden Sea. Bring rain gear and ride calmly on the sometimes sandy island roads. At De Vrijheid you can dry everything after a wet ride, ready for the next day.
