Ameland is a true walking island. The North Sea beach is about 27 kilometres long, countless paths wind through the dunes, and the polders and forest invite exploration too. The Wagenborg ferry gets you to the island in no time.
De Vrijheid is within walking distance of the beach, the lighthouse and the cosy centre of Hollum. Boots on, door closed, and your walk has already begun.

From De Vrijheid you walk straight to the wide North Sea beach. Early in the morning or at sunset you often have it almost to yourself.
From a short stroll through the village to a solid half-day dune hike: Ameland offers marked walking routes of every length.
The Hollum lighthouse is within walking distance of the house. Climb it for sweeping views over sea and island. There is no better end to a dune walk.
After a day outdoors you come home to a warm house with a spacious garden and covered terrace. Muddy boots simply dry in the shed.

The wide beach stretches along the entire north side of the island. Walk along the surf and return through the dunes. No two walks are the same.
The dune area starts right by Hollum. Winding paths take you past the lighthouse and over dune tops with views of the sea.
Near Nes you walk through the Ameland forest: surprisingly green and sheltered, ideal on a windy day. Combine it with a visit to the village.
Wander through the oldest village of Ameland, past monumental commanders' houses and charming streets, and finish on a terrace.
You can walk on Ameland all year round. Let the wind pick your route: choose the shelter of forest and inner dunes on blustery days, and the beach in fine weather.
