Ameland is accessible by ferry from Holwerd, a small harbour town on the Frisian Wadden coast. The journey to the island is part of the holiday experience — as soon as you step on the ferry, the island feeling begins.
From across the Netherlands and Germany, Holwerd is easily accessible via the motorways. Follow the signs towards "Ameland" once you are in Friesland. The route via the A31 and N357 takes you directly to the ferry harbour.
Make sure to arrive at the harbour with plenty of time to spare. Especially during peak season and holidays, it can be busy. We recommend being at the harbour at least 30 minutes before departure.
There is ample parking at the ferry harbour in Holwerd. You can safely leave your car here during your stay on Ameland. Long-term parking spaces are available at a daily rate.
The ferry to Ameland is operated by Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten (WPD). The crossing from Holwerd to Nes takes approximately 45 minutes. Several ferries run per day, all year round.
You can take your car on the ferry or travel as a foot passenger. A return ticket for a car including passengers can be booked online at wpd.nl. Foot passengers can also travel without a reservation.
Especially during peak season and school holidays, we recommend booking your crossing well in advance. Car spaces on the ferry are limited and can fill up quickly.

On Ameland, the bicycle is the most important means of transport. At De Vrijheid, 4 bikes are ready for you. Extra bikes, children's bikes and e-bikes can be hired at the bike rental in Hollum.
There is also an island bus (Arriva) connecting the villages. The bus runs regularly and stops at the ferry harbour in Nes. From the harbour, you can also take a taxi to your holiday address.
